People are being asked to nominate their local sporting superstars for the Wirral Sports Awards.
The event, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, recognises the achievements of Wirral’s dedicated sports people and is open to anybody who lives in Wirral.
Members of the public, schools, sports clubs, leagues, associations and other sporting organisations are now able to make nominations in any of the following categories:
- Club of the Year
- Coach of the Year
- Volunteer of the Year
- Young Volunteer of the Year
- Young Sports Person of the Year
- Lifetime Achievement Award
- Special Recognition Awards (for Forum members)
- School Sports Team of the Year (girls)
- School Sports Team of the Year (boys)
- School Sports Department of the Year
- Primary School Team of the Year (years 5 & 6)
- Active Wirral Organisation of the Year
- Active Wirral Individual of the Year
- Junior Sports Team of the Year
- Senior Sports Team of the Year
Two other awards, the Wirral Sports Personality of the Year and Outstanding Achievement Award, are selected by the Sports Forum’s judging committee. A new award will also be presented in recognition of it being Olympic year and also the 60th anniversary of the awards – the Merseyside Olympian of the Year Award.
The 2023 awards ceremony
Last year, a host of local clubs and individuals were honoured.
Sports Personality of the Year was awarded to Matthew Jordan from Hoylake for his performance at The Open at the Royal Liverpool Golf Course.
Former West Kirby Wasps and now Chelsea and England Lioness, Niamh Charles, picked up the Outstanding Achievement Award.
Caldy Rugby Club were named Club of the Year following their promotion to the Championship, while coach Andrew Souter was named Coach of the Year. In addition, there was a Lifetime Achievement gong for Roger Flashman, who has been involved with the club since the 1960s.
And West Kirby Grammar School Year 9/10 athletics squad picked up the prize for Secondary School Girls Team of the Year.

All short-listed candidates will be invited to the presentation awards evening on 22 October at the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton.
The Wirral Sports Forum provides a voice for local sports clubs, associations and leagues on Wirral. Supported by Wirral Council, the Forum acts as a networking hub to assess the sporting needs of the area and provide help and advice on a range of subjects including sports promotion, grants and bursaries.
The Forum’s sports bursaries provide financial help to young sports people to achieve their sporting goals.
