American Cole Hocker stunned world champion Josh Kerr and reigning Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen to win a sensational 1500m gold at Paris 2024.
Kerr’s rivalry with Ingebrigtsen had been one of the storylines of the Olympics but while the Scot beat the Norwegian to claim silver, both were shocked by Hocker racing up the inside to win an astonishing race.
Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita missed out on a medal in the women’s 200m final by the barest of margins as the USA’s Gabby Thomas stormed to gold to deny St Lucia’s Julien Alfred a sprint double.
Brittany Brown claimed bronze by a photo finish, finishing 0.02 seconds ahead of Asher-Smith in fourth with Neita a further 0.01 second behind in fifth.
Team GB settled for silver in the men’s sprint as the Netherlands smashed the world record in the gold medal final. The Great Britian trio of Ed Lowe, Hamish Turnbull and Jack Carlin were looking to match the women’s excellent gold yesterday.
Earlier, Sky Brown featured in the skateboarding and managed to push through a shoulder injury to medal yet again – landing her second successive Olympic bronze after doing so in Tokyo three years ago.

Lewis Richardson left to settle for boxing bronze in Paris after surprise judge decision
Lewis Richardson had to settle for bronze after being beaten on split decision by Mexico’s Marco Verde in the men’s 71kg semi-final at Roland Garros.
Richardson started well landing a solid punch to Verde’s face, but the Mexican grew back into the round throwing a series of different combinations and breaking through the British fighter’s defence.
The second round saw the British fighter show off his boxing skills, landing a great uppercut and a couple of big blows to Verde’s head to take the round on the majority of the judges’ cards.

Olympics 2024: Jacob Fincham-Dukes returns to work after a strong Olympic effort
Great Britain’s Jacob Fincham-Dukes finished fifth in the men’s long jump final, clearing a distance of 8.14.
The Brit came up against fierce opposition to deny him a podium finish, with Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou retaining his title after an incredible 8.48m leap – 12cm further than silver medallist Wayne Pinnock of Jamaca.
But, knowing that he has more to contend with than other athletes, Fincham-Dukes remains pleased with his performance from today.
“I really hope I’ve done myself justice, because I work full-time – I’m back at work on Friday,” told Fincham-Dukes BBC Sport.
“So I’m carrying a lot of extra stress that these guys don’t have to deal with. I’ve carried myself tremendously well this year – fourth at the Europeans, fifth at the Olympics – and I wasn’t supposed to finish fifth [based on] ranking, so I’ve done myself proud.

Olympics 2024: Great Britain wins silver in the Track Cycling Men’s Team Sprint
Great Britain’s Jack Carlin, Ed Lowe and Hamish Turnbull crossed the finish line 0.865 seconds behind the Netherlands to secure a silver medal and new national best.
The Netherlands, meanwhile, set a new world record of 40.949 seconds, but GB’s riders are nonetheless pleased with their overall performance.
“I’m ecstatic. A silver medal is something I didn’t think was possible going into this,” Lowe told BBC Sport. “I’ll definitely take that.”
Turnbull added: “I’m buzzing. We weren’t expecting to fight for gold, we were chasing the bronze.
“To get into that gold final, all stress was off and we could really enjoy it and show everyone what we could do without any pressure on our backs.”
Carlin said: “I’m feeling really good. As a team we came and delivered, it was the best we could have done on the day.
“They’re two boys that have come in without any experience really at this kind of level, they’ve really stepped up and I’m really proud of both of them.”

Olympics 2024: Josh Kerr wins silver in the men’s 1500m final
Great Britain’s Josh Kerr settled for silver in a race that saw a dramatic finish, with USA’s Cole Hocker steaming past the Brit down the final stretch to become an unlikely champion.
Kerr, nonetheless, set a new British record with a time of 3:27.79 minutes, reflecting on his performance with an ounce of both pride and disappointment.
“I can’t walk away from a championship disappointed. Obviously I said what my goals were – it was pretty obvious – but it was a performance out there today that I was extremely proud of,” he told BBC Sport.
“I focused on my controllables, and ran the fastest and best tactical 1500m I’ve ever done in my life.
“And so, when you start worrying about what everyone else does – from the results – you’ll never be satisfied.
“It’s not the colour of medal I want, but it’s working towards the right colour, from bronze to silver.
“I knew we had to weather a storm early, keep calm, and stay as emotionally locked in as we could. I’m super proud of the way I executed it today.”

Olympics 2024: Dina Asher-Smith falls agonisingly short of a medal
Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith was narrowly pipped by Brittany Brown in the women’s 200m final, crossing the finish line in fourth with a time of 22.22 seconds.
USA’s Gabrielle Thomas won gold with an astonishing time of 21.83 seconds, while Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia placed second.
“I’m happy, I actually just really enjoyed it. The crowd was amazing, the track was amazing,” Asher-Smith told BBC Sport.
“I just got told when the gun goes run and whatever happens happens. There’s not many time you get told that instruction. I just got told to go for it and I enjoyed it. It was a great race.
“I was just focussed on running. I had no idea where I came. My eyesight is not great so I just wait for the screen before I embarrass myself.
“They are two separate events so I’m still really disappointed in the 100[m]. But overall I’m happy because I know I’ve been in a great place all season and that’s why I was disappointed in the 100[m].
“But for the first year with a new coach I think it’s a great platform to build from. I had some fun in this one. That’s always a plus.”

Olympics 2024: Lewis Richardson Secures Bronze in a Tight Semi-final
Lewis Richarson became the only GB boxer to medal in Paris, losing a close split decision to Mexican fighter Marco Verde in the men’s 71kg semi-finals.
Richardson boxed well on the outside – putting his long levers to great use – but was ultimately denied a place in the final.
“It’s devastating, it’s raw. Obviously disappointed to miss out on the final and box for a gold on Friday night,” Richardson told the BBC.
“Initial disappointment but I hope to look back and be really proud of what I have achieved because I have created history within my city, Colchester.
“I’m the only British boxer to medal at these Games so hopefully I will look back with pride and happiness in the future. I’ll have to go back and analyse it but it was close, it was a 3-2 split decision.
“Two of the judges went for me, three went against me, every round was competitive and close and that’s amateur boxing. It’s just a flip of the coin sometimes and in this case it didn’t go my way.”

Olympics 2024: Sky Brown claims bronze again despite injury
A brilliant performance from Sky Brown earlier today saw the talented teen skateboarder claim bronze for Great Britain – for the second Olympics Games in a row.
The Brit needed a huge final run to improve on her own earlier score – which briefly had her in the silver medal position – and stay in the hunt, following Australian Arisa Trew’s sensational showing which landed her gold.
Brown scored 92.31 on her final run to nip ahead of Dora Varella, before Japan’s Cocona Hiraki snared second spot with the last run of the afternoon. Trew, however, took top spot on the podium with a 93.18 score – having fallen on her first attempt and only scoring well enough for fourth on her second.
“This journey has been crazy since Tokyo,” Brown said after claiming bronze again. “This Paris one, just watching the level change and knowing we are all pushing boundaries, it’s just been really cool.
“It’s definitely nerve-wracking with that big audience out there, but I love it. That’s what keeps me hyped up. It was a little scary, just falling on my shoulder on my last run and then going to the finals knowing I had to kind of send it. I fought through it and gave it my best.”
