One of England’s most ‘elegant seaside resorts is among UK’s ‘sunniest’ spots

With its seafront lined with white-fronted Victorian hotels, a 19th-century pier stretching out into the English Channel and more than three miles of shingle beaches, Eastbourne has been described by Tripadvisor as “one of England’s most elegant seaside resorts“. According to data from the last 10 years, it’s also one of the best places to visit if you’re looking for sunshine.

Using data from the Met Office over the last decade, including total rainfall, total sunshine duration, mean daily maximum temperature and mean daily mini temperature data, Betfair Live Casino dubbed Eastbourne among one of the UK’s “sunniest” spots for a staycation.

According to their findings, over the last 10 years, Eastbourne enjoyed a total of 18,810.15 hours of sun – losing out only to Hastings which enjoyed 18,855.03 hours. Of course, sunshine can occur throughout the year, so this doesn’t always mean you’ll be basking in the toastiest of temperatures.

However, based on the Met Office‘s UK climate averages, July is typically the sunniest month in the coastal resort with average sunshine hours equating to 251.50. August is usually the warmest month, with average maximum daily highs reaching 21.26C.

Beachy Head is one of the most popular destinations in Eastbourne, having won a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award in 2023. Here, you will find the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain towering 530 feet high.

These majestic cliffs feature an iconic old lighthouse and offer stunning views across the channel.

Eastbourne Pier is perhaps one of the best spots to tuck into fish and chips while watching the tide roll in.

The Victorian Pier is home to a fish and chip shop, along with a variety of shops, a waterfront cafe and bar, tea rooms, a coffee shop, fishing spots and even a nightclub. It’s also been used as a filming location for multiple TV series including Poirot, A Place in the Sun, Art Attack, Flog It, and BBC CCTV.

Attracting over 4.9 million visitors per year, it’s no surprise Eastbourne is home to a number of hotels, holiday rentals and B&Bs. One of the top-rated hotels in the resort, according to Tripadvisor ratings, is The Lansdowne on King Edward’s Parade.

The hotel has been given a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award for 2024.

“The Lansdowne Hotel is privately owned and has been in the same family ownership since 1912,” said Tripadvisor. “It is this that has given the property a personal touch that is still very evident today.”

With a premier position on the seafront, this is a fantastic, historic location if you want to wake up to sea views each day.
