Plan for major development extension to Glasgow shopping centre

The retail centre in the east of Glasgow is home to some of the biggest names in the industry.

Plans for a big expansion were first submitted in 2007 but were not fully completed.

The current proposal, to be considered by councillors once fully submitted, is to finish the job with another retail block with 60,000 additional square feet of shop space.

It will see a block 10 added to the centre with three new units, A. B and C, each with a ground and first floor.

The plan is for a retail and leisure development with public realm improvements.

It is not known if there are any shopping firms already signed up to move into the planned extension at the centre.

In 2007 the proposal was for three new blocks, 8,9 and 10, for a new department store, food hall and café, with car parking and public transport facilities.

Blocks 8 and 9 were completed but block 10 was left outstanding.

The original Block 10 permission extended to 30,000 sq ft of Class 1 retail on both ground and first floors.

It will mean, once complete the centre, beside the M8 at Easterhouse, will have space to attract more retail and leisure outlets.

A new Primark store is already due to open at the centre on December 5, expected to give the centre a boost in the run up to Christmas.

The Fort has submitted a Proposal of Application Notice to the council for the new development.

As it is considered a major development under town and country planning laws there will be a 12 week pre-application period where people in the area can see the plans.

Public consultation event will be held at Tinderbox, at the Fort on Wednesday 11th December between 2pm and 7pm and again on Thursday 16th January between 4pm and 8pm.
