So, which destination failed to tick all the boxes for a family-friendly holiday?
Despite Turkey’s popularity, its limited selection of family-friendly hotels and attractions puts it way behind other popular European destinations, making it the least suitable for families.
Let’s take a look at the results in a bit more detail. Here are the worst European destinations for family holidays, according to GoCompare.
Turkey
Family score: 2.7/10
Turkey came last for family friendliness. It offers limited options with only 5,500 family-friendly hotels and 2,000 attractions.
Despite boasting a high airport punctuality rate of 90 percent, Turkey faces one of the highest price hikes during peak seasons, with prices increasing by 31 percent on average. Families seeking budget-friendly options might need to consider alternative destinations.
Portugal
Family score: 3.1/10
Portugal falls behind when it comes to fewer family-friendly accommodations and attractions compared to the top spot. In fact, with only 2,700 attractions, Portugal struggles to compete.
Portugal’s airports also have the lowest punctuality rate at 62 percent, impacting travel reliability. However, there is a modest 18 percent price increase during peak seasons that offers some financial relief, but overall, Portugal scores low as a family-friendly holiday destination.
Greece
Family score: 4.1/10
Greece has over 17,000 family-friendly hotels and nearly 4,000 suitable attractions, making it a practical family destination.
Despite this, Greece offers fewer options for things to do. Greece’s standout feature is its exceptional airport punctuality rate of 96 percent, providing a smooth travel experience. But, Greece has a 28 percent price increase during peak holidays.
Spain
Family score: 6.8/10
Spain offers 31,186 family-friendly hotels and over 8,000 attractions. Spain’s airport punctuality rate of 73 percent also falls short of the top ranking’s reliability. What’s more, there is a 22 percent price hike during peak travel seasons.
France
Family score: 8.5/10
France is another excellent option for families, with more than 44,000 family-friendly accommodations and nearly 12,000 attractions.
The country’s airport punctuality rate is higher than the spot at 81 percent, making it more convenient for travel. But, France’s biggest drawback is the 20 percent price increase during peak seasons, which calls for careful budgeting.
Italy
Family score: 9/10
Italy takes the crown as the most family-friendly destination in Europe, which might come as a surprise as it’s pitted against the likes of Spain and Portugal.
But, boasting over 40,000 hotels and 16,000 attractions suitable for families, Italy offers a wide range of accommodations and activities.
The airports have a decent punctuality rate of 79 percent, providing reliable travel. Most impressively, Italy has a minimal two percent price increase during peak holiday seasons, making it a budget-friendly choice.
