Guidance for Portugal travel from the UK has been changed again
The Foreign Office has updated a warning issued earlier this week for anyone travelling to Portugal from the UK. The government office is responsible for, among many other things, helping to keep British nationals safe and informed while travelling.
On Tuesday it amended its travel guidance for Portugal. An alert issued at the time read: “Forest fires. There are currently a significant number of forest fires burning in several parts of Portugal. The Portuguese government has declared a state of alert until 11:59pm on Thursday 19 September.

“Access to forests and activities in rural areas may be restricted. Roads may be closed due to smoke and ash. The situation is fast-moving and could change rapidly.”

A new update issued this morning, Friday, explains that the fires have now “been brought under control” by Portuguese authorities. It adds: “There remains a risk of reignition and access to forests and activities in rural areas may still be restricted. Some roads may still be closed.”

British nationals who are planning to travel to, or are currently in, Portugal are advised: “Keep up-to-date with developments and follow the advice of the Civil Protection Authority. Check [the UK Foreign Office’s] Safety and Security page for more information.”
Government bosses added that the travel advice “also covers Madeira, Porto Santo and the Azores.” Millions of people travel from the UK to Portugal each year.
