Premier League clubs “circling” – Lille ‘expect offers’ for England international

Lille are reportedly preparing for several offers from Premier League clubs for former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes during the January transfer window.

Lille are reportedly preparing for several offers from Premier League clubs for former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes.

Gomes started his career at Old Trafford but managed just 10 first-team appearances before departing in 2020 on loan to Portuguese club Boavista.

The 24-year-old then made a permanent move to France where three successful seasons with Lille have revitalised his career, earning him his international debut under Lee Carsley.

The England international’s impressive development has attracted the attention of top clubs across Europe, and recent reports suggest that a return to England could be on the cards.

Gomes on the radar of Premier League clubs

Although specific clubs have not been mentioned, The Telegraph claim that several teams from both the Premier League and across Europe are keeping an eye on Gomes.

The report adds that Les Dogues find themselves in a vulnerable position, as the 24-year-old’s contract only extends until 2025, meaning that he will be able to open negotiations with overseas clubs in January.

As a result, if Lille are unable to tie Gomes down to a new deal soon, they may look to cash in on the England attacker to avoid losing him for free next year.

Gomes has contributed to 27 goals in 121 appearances for the club, including netting two goals and providing 10 assists in 45 matches across all competitions last season.

TEAMtalk recently reported that Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Liverpool all admire and hold an interest in the midfielder.

Gomes confirms interest from English clubs

In a recent interview with the media, Gomes disclosed that he had turned down offers to return to England in the years following his departure from Old Trafford.

While he was somewhat reserved about the topic, the Lille man did not dismiss the possibility of returning to the Premier League.

Asked about interest from English clubs, Gomes said: “I have … but I believe everything will happen naturally and at its own time and I am really chilled.

“So, if something was to come up that did make sense, you never know in football…”

Gomes and Lille return to league action on Saturday evening, when they travel to Stade Oceane to face Le Havre.
