A pretty European city is one of Europe’s most walkable despite having hardly any British tourists.
Leiden in the Netherlands looks like a mini-Amsterdam with its stunning canals punctuated by pretty little bridges but without the jumbo crowds and vulgar stag parties.
Visitors could spend their whole trip roaming its winding streets and taking in its postcard perfect views but the city is also packed with some brilliant attractions.
The Singelpark offers a wonderful tour of Leiden, with the green space featuring an array of art lining its paths which wrap around the city.
The trail takes hours to complete meaning visitors will need to leave plenty of time to fit it all in, but according to visitors it is well worth it.
One Tripadvisor review read: “A beautiful green park through a very beautiful city.
“Good for walks and family outings. You can also take beautiful photos of the park and show them to others.”
Those wanting to see the city while resting their legs can take one of a number of boat trips around Leiden with both summer cruises and booze cruises on offer.
Leiden also has some of the best examples of Dutch windmills such as De Valk, which allows visitors to climb its tower, while it is also the home of Keukenhof Tulip Gardens.
The gardens are known as one of the most beautiful in the world and are easily accessible by public transport.
Leiden is also home to some brilliant museums such as the National Museum of Antiquities, which is home to masses of archaeological treasures. and Museum Volkenkunde, which tells the story of the different cultures living within the city.
One visitor said of Museum Volkenkunde: “We visited this extremely interesting museum and were amazed by the wealth of exhibits covering every continent.
“Of particular interest was Indonesia (former Dutch East Indies). We spent far longer here than we had planned.”
Those wishing to visit Leiden for themselves can book a return flight to Amsterdam for about £70 in June flying from Manchester with EasyJet.
Once in the Dutch capital, visitors will need to take a train from Schiphol Airport Train Station to Leiden which takes just 20 minutes.
