Must read

A pretty UK city – with streets that are so quaint they don’t look real – is being hailed as the perfect destination for a romantic getaway.

If you’re seeking a charming autumn weekend break without the need for air travel, York is an excellent choice. This historic city boasts top-notch shopping, a plethora of bars and restaurants, and a wealth of attractions to suit all ages and interests.

York offers a variety of activities from ghost walks to river cruises and museum visits, ensuring you’ll never be at a loss for things to do. However, simply strolling around this medieval city centre can be equally delightful.

If the weather permits, a walk along the city walls provides a unique perspective on this romantic destination.  Planning a weekend in  York can be overwhelming due to the sheer number of attractions.

The city reportedly has more attractions per square mile than any other UK location, reports the Liverpool Echo. Topping the list is the magnificent  York Minster Cathedral.

Dating back to the seventh century, this awe-inspiring structure features stunning medieval stained glass windows.  Despite suffering a devastating fire in 1984 that caused its roof to collapse, the cathedral has been beautifully restored.

The Shambles, a shopping street in the city centre, is another must-see. It’s one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval shopping streets and is said to have inspired Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter series.

For those in need of refreshment, Betty’s Tearoom in St Helen’s Square is an iconic spot for a cup of tea and cake. However, be sure to book in advance for their legendary afternoon tea.

History enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy in  York. The Railway Museum, located not far from the city centre, is a fantastic attraction, while the Jorvic Viking Centre offers an immersive experience of Viking life in the city, complete with dioramas, sounds and smells.

York is also known for its ghostly reputation, with numerous ghost tours available for those brave enough. These tours reveal the chilling tales of the city’s past and guide visitors through the alleyways, streets and buildings where phantoms have reportedly been sighted.
