Must read

If you’re looking for an autumn day out before winter sets in, this pretty village could be the perfect place for you – and there’s lots of other great places to stop by and see on the way.

Audlem in Cheshire is a small but picturesque village located near to the border between England and Wales.

Nearby, you’ll find Shropshire Union Canal Main Line where you can take idyllic waterside walks.

For a small village, it is bursting with independent establishments, nestled along its streets which are lined with pretty period properties.

At the central crossroads, you’ll find the village’s beautiful and historic church which is a focal point of the area.

One person who visited the St. James the Great church on Tripadvisor said: “The church is located on a prominent raised site in the centre of the village.

“It has magnificent architecture with an inspiring and well-maintained interior. I particularly enjoyed the stained glass windows, which mostly date from the 19th century. Look out for the tapestry made in 1983, which depicts the life of the community past and present.

“An information booklet about the church can be purchased for £1. There were also postcards of the church for sale.”

According to the Manchester Evening News, this attractive village could be the ‘proudest’ village community in England. Over winter, the village is decorated with Christmas trees and twinkling lights which give it a festive feel.

If you’d like to stop off at a village pub for a rest, drink, or bite to eat, the Rising Sun Inn is a popular choice in the area.

One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “Met for lunch with a friend here. It is a beautiful olde world style country pub with a lovely ambiance.

“We were welcomed by staff who were pleasant and helpful, there was a great choice of menu and drinks.

“It has affordable prices and a very clean restaurant and bathroom. Staff were attentive and helpful throughout. Our meal was delicious and professionally presented – well worth a visit.”
