Protect your luggage by never travelling with a suitcase with ‘bright colours’

Must read

As summer approaches many of us will be looking forward to going abroad for a holiday, but things can quickly go wrong for travellers if they are not prepared.

While travelling is usually a time to relax, it is important to also remain vigilant as it is easy for thieves to take advantage of holidaymakers with their guard down if they are not careful.

However, there is no need to spend a vacation paranoid or stressed about possessions as long as you take the right precautions.

Victoria Williams, a travelling expert from Surley Ask has shared her best tips for keeping luggage “safe and lecture” while travelling.

She said: “[Here are]  practical steps to secure your possessions and give you peace of mind while on the move. Stay tuned; we’re unlocking savvy travel secrets!”

How to keep your luggage safe while travelling

Avoid flashy and colourful suitcase designs

While it might seem fun to pick a colourful or patterned suitcase design, it is best to choose practicality and style when it comes to travelling.

Victoria said: “Choose luggage with classic, understated designs to avoid drawing unnecessary attention.

“Bright, flashy colours and trendy patterns can make your bag stand out in a crowd, potentially attracting unwanted attention from thieves.”

Try to pick a suitcase with a neutral or dark design which will be less likely to attract attention and blend into your environment.

Choosing a suitcase with a hard shell casing or protective casing will also help protect your possessions when it is being handled at the airport and prevent the case from being scratched or dented.

Do not rely on zips to keep possessions secure

When travelling try to avoid relying on zips to protect your possessions as they can easily be opened or tampered with, which makes it easy for potential thieves to access your luggage.

Victoria said: “Instead, opt for suitcases and bags with secure locking mechanisms and strong clasps that are less prone to damage or tampering during transit.”

She added: “By avoiding placing full trust in zips alone, you can significantly reduce the chance of theft and protect your belongings throughout your journey.”

Buy a luggage safety strap

A luggage safety strap is an accessory that will keep your suitcase tightly closed even if the zipper or lock is broken

Victoria said: “Secure your luggage with a reliable safety strap to prevent accidental opening and secure your belongings during transit.

“The strap adds an extra layer of protection against theft, as it makes it more difficult for unauthorised access.”

Not only is a safety trap an added security measure but it is also very convenient as it has built-in handles, making it easier to carry your suitcase and also helps stabilise your luggage to reduce the risk of tripping when walking with luggage.

Following these simple steps when buying a suitcase will help keep your possessions safe while on holiday and give you more peace of mind so you can relax on your travels.

Victoria said: “Keeping your luggage safe and secure is essential for protecting your valuable items and avoiding theft and damage. Using locks, being vigilant, and avoiding flashy designs are effective ways to secure your luggage before you travel.”
