Republic of Ireland: Injured captain Seamus Coleman out of Greece game as Festy Ebosele joins squad

Must read

Republic of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman has been ruled out of Tuesday’s Nations League game against Greece by injury and replaced in the squad by Festy Ebosele.

Coleman, 35, had to be substituted because of a knock in the second half of the Nations League home defeat by England on Saturday.

The Football Association of Ireland said that Coleman’s injury means he will return to his club, Everton.

Coleman, who lined up on the right side of a three-man Ireland defence, suffered his knock – seemingly to his left ankle – when England defender Harry Maguire landed on him after contesting an aerial ball.

Udinese’s Ebosele, who has three Ireland caps, is on a season-long loan at Watford.

With Coleman ruled out, Matt Doherty could drop back from his wing-back role to the defence for Tuesday’s game in Dublin.

Heimir Hallgrimsson’s first game in charge saw the Irish decidedly second best in Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat and they will look to bounce back against a Greece team who defeated them home and away in the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.
