Must read

Rivals stars David Tennant and Alex Hassell have teamed up with British fashion house Burberry for an eye catching London themed Christmas advert on Wednesday.

The actors, who portray Lord Tony Baddingham (Tennant) and Rupert Campbell-Black (Hassell) in the new Disney series, cut dapper figures as they walked down the street chatting away.

Doctor Who star David, 53, turned heads in a smart £3,580 pin striped double breasted suit and tie which he wore with a navy jacket and a £420 red scarf by the designer.

Meanwhile Alex, 44, was seen wearing a similar suit under a £1,690 coat as he carried a number of perfectly wrapped presents in Burberry red paper stacked on top of each other.

The pair were seen walking laden with gifts before Alex leaned against a lamp post, while David hailed an iconic black London cab.

Alex and David were all smiles as they climbed into the taxi before driving off as festive music played over the clip.

Burberry shared the advert on Instagram and wrote: ‘Co-stars and friends David Tennant and Alex Hassell embrace the spirit of the season in heritage rainwear and iconic Burberry accessories #WrappedInBurberry’

Since Rivals dropped on Disney+ last month, fans have said they are ‘obsessed’ with the show.

The highly-anticipated series, which has been hailed as a ‘bonkbuster,’ has an average of 93% on the Tomatometer, based on the glowing early reviews of fourteen critics.

Joining David and Alex in the star-studded cast is Aidan Turner, Emily Atack, Danny Dyer, Katherine Parkinson, Oliver Chris and Claire Rushbrook.

The story is set in 1986 and follows the cut throat world of television, including the tense rivalry between Rupert Campbell-Black (Hassell) and Lord Tony Baddingham (Tennant).

During a series of parties and luncheons in Lord Baddingham’s country pile, steamy affairs and star-crossed yearnings are explored.

It comes after Alex has revealed he did in fact go fully nude for saucy scenes as lothario Campbell-Black in the eye-popping series.

The actor confessed that he bared his actual penis during the infamous tennis scene with busty co-star Emily Atack, 34, after shunning the option of using a prosthetic or digital simulation and rather than being nervous, cheekily admitted: ‘I am not without attributes.’

He told Times 2 magazine: ‘I don’t mind seeing my bum and willy on screen, I wouldn’t have done the job if I was particularly shy about my body.’

The character’s erotic endeavours sees him join the mile high club on Concorde just seconds into the first episode, before stripping off to make love on a fur rug.

He told Metro: ‘It was discussed how comfortable I was whether or not it would be me or prosthetics or digital. But in the end, we just went for it.’

Taking about the logistics of filming the raunchy scenes he said: ‘You pre-plan all this stuff and then on the day, you’re just trying not to giggle too much.’

Rivals – what do the critics say?

The Daily Mail

Rating:

‘Dame Jilly’s multimillion-selling Rutshire Chronicles kicks off with so much sex and swearing and nudity and ridiculously brilliant, tongue-in-cheek fun that it almost feels as if, instead of chopping out some of Jilly’s joy, executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins and his brilliant team of writers have added even more in.’

The Times

Rating:

‘How much you enjoy Rivals will depend on how much of a Jilly Cooper fan you are (I think she is fabulous). But even if you’re not au fait with the books you can tuck in to a lavish series that takes you back to a decade (it is set in 1986) before mobile phones and when people still got steaming drunk at lunchtime.

‘This is a big pink Anglo bubblegum of a production and a splash of retro-escapism. Lord knows we all need a bit of that right now.’

Digital Spy

Rating:

‘When the show isn’t straying too far from the sex, money and chicanery, it’s good soapy fun ¿ albeit with a stonking cliffhanger that might leave you frothing at the mouth, since we don’t know if Disney will be game to sink another whopping budget into more.

‘You will blush. You will cackle. You will gasp.’

The Telegraph

Rating:

‘Sex, class and the Eighties in one riotously OTT package, and we haven’t even got to the naked tennis yet. Settle down and enjoy.’

‘There are eight episodes. It sags a bit towards the end, when the script concerns itself more with the business of regional television franchises than love and lust and shirtless hunks. But, on the whole, it’s a marvellous antidote to modern life.’

The Evening Standard

Rating:

‘This tumescent adaptation of’s 1980s bonkbuster from Disney+ is stuffed with pneumatic talent and opens with a statement of intent.’

‘Is Rivals good TV? God, no. It’s brash, obvious, cartoonish. Is it great entertainment. Phwoar, yes.’
