Sainsbury’s has launched a new local store inside one of the UK’s busiest airports.
Passengers travelling to and from Edinburgh Airport will now be able to pick up food, drinks, and last-minute travel essentials at the new convenience store.
The Sainsbury’s Local opened on December 12, replacing the previous tenant, M&S. Located before security, the new store will be open 24 hours, serving both arriving and departing passengers and airport staff.
It is the first Sainsbury’s store ever to be located at an airport, and its arrival is part of a ‘major revamp’ of the shopping options available at Edinburgh Airport, according to the supermarket.
The shop will stock a range of items including Sainsbury’s meal deals, fruit and veg, meat, fish and bakery items. It will also feature a ‘bespoke Scottish selection’, showcasing locally sourced favourites.
As with any other Sainsbury’s store, customers can take advantage of its Click & Collect service, enabling them to order online from Argos, Habitat and Tu Clothing brands for collection.
Sainsbury’s first announced the opening in October, as part of its strategy to expand its convenience store estate which began in 2023. The retailer aims to open between 20 and 25 new convenience stores each year.
Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s director of property, procurement & EV Ventures, said: ‘We’re very excited to launch Sainsbury’s Local in a whole new setting for the first time today with the opening of our Edinburgh Airport store.
‘We want to build on the resounding success of our other travel hub stores, for example in UK train stations, and we’ll be listening closely to feedback from customers in the coming weeks to learn about what they want to see from this kind of Local.
‘We then hope to bring Sainsbury’s unbeatable combination of outstanding value, quality food and great service to more airport locations in the UK.’
Jordan Mudie, Sainsbury’s Edinburgh Airport store manager, said: ‘My team and I are thrilled to be open for business in Edinburgh Airport.
‘After months of work to get everything ready, we’re ready to help and serve our new customers 24 horse a day.
‘We’re passionate about providing good food for all of us and we’re delighted to be able to bring Sainsbury’s tasty, great-value products and helpful service to customers from this fantastic airport location.
‘I’m really grateful for all the support we’ve received along the way and I hope everyone likes the new store as much as we do.’
