Users of the company’s SmartThings technology will be able to integrate their energy management system with a range of other services and features to lower heating costs

Samsung Electronics UK is targeting a significant expansion of features offered via its energy-saving technologies to help manage heating performance and costs in homes. The focus will be backed through a combination of industry partnerships and other initiatives to aid customers to optimise their energy use ahead of the winter season.

One example of the company’s plans includes trying to improve access to smarter home energy management through the provision of its SmartThings Energy platform.

Other developments include the integration of the Hive thermostat technology into the SmartThings app. Samsung said this can offer users seamless control over their property’s temperature management.

From mid-October, the features will allow users of the technology to make use of British Gas’ PeakSave programme, which incentivises customers to shift their electricity use to times of lower demand through offers of half-price rates during off-peak hours.

In addition to the Hive partnership, SmartThings Energy will now support Tesla’s solar energy solutions, allowing UK users to manage Tesla Powerwall batteries and Solar Inverters via the SmartThings app.

The company says its connectivity platform can have cost saving and performance benefits when managing domestic energy by allowing users to monitor energy production and storage.

One potential benefit of this feature would be to aid users in better preparing for power outages when they are identified by Tesla’s technology through features such as the ‘Storm Watch’ weather monitoring service.

Deborah Honig, chief customer officer at Samsung UK and Ireland, said the partnerships aimed to address season energy challenges. She said: “As we head into winter, controlling energy consumption becomes even more critical. We’re committed to providing tech solutions that make energy management easier and more intuitive for our customers.”

Dan Rosenfield, managing director of Hive, added: “By integrating our market-leading solutions into SmartThings, we’re helping customers save on energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint, especially during the crucial winter months.”
