Spanish island where British expats can live in the sun for just £550 per month

Tenerife has long been a favourite destination for British tourists who visit the island in their thousands each year. But not everyone is simply looking for a brief getaway; some may be contemplating a permanent move.

As the cost of living crisis deepens and household budgets continue to tighten, many are wondering whether it might be time to relocate abroad.

Popular options include Spain, Italy, France, and their associated islands. Among these, Tenerife is particularly affordable for those seeking a lower cost of living. Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.

According to the blog Wander Onwards, the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is a “coastal port city full of amazing bars, restaurants, and beaches.”

The blog notes that one can rent a one-bedroom apartment in the city for an average of $700 (around £552) per month.

By contrast, the average monthly rent for a flat in London ranges from £1,500 to £1,600, as of October 2023, according to data from Rent London Flat.

They added: “Despite being an island city, this bustling metropolis is surprisingly affordable.”

Alongside these reasonable costs, Tenerife remains one of the most popular islands in the region.

Writing about Tenerife, Lonely Planet says: “Attracting over six million visitors a year, the island’s most famous southern resorts offer Brit-infused revelry and clubbing, combined with white sandy beaches and all-inclusive resorts.”

They continue: “Get your explorer’s hat on and step beyond the tourist spots and you’ll discover an island of extraordinary beauty and diversity, with remote mountain-ridge villages, cultured port settlements, and charming ancient towns.”

Highlights include the Pico del Teide, the Auditorio de Tenerife, the Jardín Botánico, and Acantilados de los Gigantes, a stunning set of dark rock cliffs rising 600 metres above the sea.

Tenerife also boasts Loro Parque, one of the top-rated attractions on TripAdvisor, home to hundreds of animal species cared for year-round.

In addition to urban sights and dramatic cliffs, Tenerife offers a variety of beautiful beaches where tourists and residents alike can relax in the sun during the warmer months.
