Spanish seaside resort is ‘cheapest for holidays this summer’

A stunning strip of Mediterranean coastline in Spain’s Catalonia region has been named one of the “cheapest” holiday destinations for a week-long holiday this summer. The Costa Dorada (Costa Daurada), which means “Golden Coast”, takes its name from its incredible 81km of stunning sands.

It’s this destination that experts from TravelSupermarket say is the cheapest for a summer holiday between July 27 and August 25.

The study was based on searches from English airports, taking into account a selection of holiday deals available on the TravelSupermarket website.

According to the study, the average price of a holiday to Costa Dorada this summer is £616.59 if booked now. While the clock might be ticking down to the school summer holidays, last-minute offers are still an option according to Travel Supermarket.

A spokesperson said: “It’s not too late for families if they have still not booked a summer holiday.”

On average, the region experiences 300 days of sunshine each year, and in July and August, the resorts are baked with average high temperatures of 31C. Rain is scarce at this time of year, with just two days of rain on average.

One of the region’s most popular holiday resorts is Salou, thanks to its range of family-friendly amenities and Blue Flag beach.

However, if you’re looking for something a little quieter, Cambrils and La Pineda offer a more peaceful environment.

The former is often known as the culinary capital of the Costa Dorada, thanks to the many eateries serving up fresh local ingredients. As a traditional fishing port town, seafood is on the menu.

“Between the historic population centre and the ports, life in Cambrils unfurls peacefully around beaches and promenades,” explained Tripadvisor’s experts. “Looking on as fishing boats glide into the harbour and discovering the Old Quarter are two of the many pleasures that await in this Catalan town.”

La Pineda promises a vast stretch of sand, home to four kilometres of beach which lines the seafront promenade. The area is regularly awarded Blue Flags for its beaches and is highly commended for its clean and safe waters.

The nearest airport to Costa Dorada is Reus (REU) Airport, which is served by airlines including Jet2, easyJet and Ryanair.
