Stars in town for World Championship of Legends cricket series

Actors from the world of Bollywood have converged on Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham for the World Championship of Legends series.

The tournament sees some of the most famous retired cricketers go head-to-head in a Twenty20 format.

Ajay Devgn, who has appeared in more than 100 films, was seen watching the game with fellow actor and model Jacqueline Fernandez.

The league is in its first year and brings together six international teams – India, Pakistan, England, West Indies and South Africa.

Fans cheered on former internationals Yuvraj Singh, Kevin Pietersen, Chris Gayle, Shahid Afridi, Misbah-ul-Haq, Darren Sammy, Dale Steyn and local hero Ian Bell, among others.

League co-owners Harshit Tomar and Ajay Devgn said each match was an opportunity to relive the golden moments of cricket history.

“We chose Birmingham as it is rich in culture and diversity – it brings all communities together,” Mr Tomar said.

Chris Gayle, captain of the West Indies team, who still holds several records in the Indian Premier League, took five wickets against England and scored a half century.

“I love all Jamaican restaurants here, I like that Birmingham has all different cultures here and a good night life,” he said.

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi described the love from British Asians as “overwhelming” and said the setting was inspiring.

“It’s truly an honour to play here in Birmingham, a place that holds a special atmosphere, especially when we play England,” he said.

Husayn, from Burton upon Trent, in Staffordshire, said the match between England and Pakistan was an unforgettable experience.

“Secretly, I think [my father] is enjoying this event even more than me, but that’s the beauty of this tournament,” he said.

“It spans generations and races, bringing us all together to enjoy the beauty of sport.”

The final takes place on Saturday 13 July.
