The beautiful country home to Europe’s biggest national park

Must read

This breathtaking part of Europe is one of the most exciting places to visit in the autumn.

Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland is one of Europe’s largest national parks and with its incredible scenery, it’s no wonder so many people are desperate to make the trip over to it.

Inside the park is the Svínafellsjökull Glacier which was used as a film set in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster film, Batman Begins.

This isn’t the only time the mountains have been featured in a film due to their unique beauty. Other Hollywood directors have used the backdrop for productions including Die Another Day, Prometheus and Interstellar.

Vatnajökull National Park was added to the World Heritage Sites list by UNESCO in 2019.

One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “Seeing glaciers was truly a life changing experience; not only are they truly breathtaking, you see them melting before your eyes!

“I couldn’t take my eyes off the scenery; I just kept looking at what was in front of me and felt truly lucky to be alive and have the means to see this. It was the perfect thing to do in June 2022, when I was moving on from the pandemic.

“It was a real eat, pray, love experience, and I’ve been urging everyone to go ever since. For this visit, definitely bring good gear; there are all kinds of vendors, and depending on what you do, they’ll have heavy coats, life jackets, etc. I would recommend really engaging with this experience, if you can.”

The park is located around 200 miles from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik and is best reached by car.

There are several hiking routes you can take throughout the park which vary in difficulty so it is important to ensure you choose the right path for your experience.

If you do plan to visit the park, it’s important to do some research beforehand as it is so large you can easily get lost either trying to find your way there or when you’re deep into the park on foot.

You can combine your visit to this huge and impressive park with a visit to Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. The top must-see tourist attraction in the city is the Hallgrimskirkja church.

One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “Beautiful, interesting church with an amazing organ and a great view from the church tower. If you don’t go up in the tower it’s free, and definitely worth stopping in just to see the building. We also enjoyed going up in the tower for the city views.”
