Many of us decide to head overseas when it comes to choosing a beach holiday in the summer.
European resorts in Italy, Spain and Greece guarantee long days of glorious sunshine and hot temperatures – the perfect antidote to a sometimes wet British summer.
But, for those who prefer to stay local, then the UK has a plethora of coastal resorts, each with its own unique offerings.
One in particular has become a favourite with Brits and provides plenty of entertainment for all the family.
King Edwards Bay is a small sandy bay enclosed by cliffs and grassy banks. The beach is at the foot of Tynemouth Priory and Castle, a historic site run by English Heritage.
The bay is only a short walk from Tynemouth Front Street and is a Blue Flag and Seaside award-winning beach.
The Castle and Priory are said to be home to a famous Viking ghost, who is said to be seen wandering the castle grounds looking out onto the sea on lovely breezy days when the wind comes in off the water.
Legend has it that a wounded Viking named Olaf was accepted as a resident of Tynemouth Priory by the monks.
Olaf, who was nursed back to health, joined their monastery. As fate would have it, the Vikings returned to the same area to launch another raid.
This time, Olaf’s brother was among those killed. It is said Olaf was so grief-stricken by the death of his brother that he died while praying in the chapel.
The beach has received rave reviews from tourists on Tripadvisor, with many giving it a five out of five.
One visitor wrote: “Lovely golden sandy beach quite close to the residential housing.
“It is a pretty, secluded sandy bay., near the ruins of the priory. There are lots of steps you go down to access the beach.
“Free car parking is available close by and it is safe and clean. Close to The Turks Head pub. Other attractions are nearby such as the ruins of the priory and castle, pier.”
