The picturesque Yorkshire village of Robin Hood’s Bay has consistently been recognised as one of the UK’s most beautiful locations.
The charming fishing village, nestled in the North Yorkshire Moors, secured fourth place in a survey of 160 locations across the country by FBM Holidays back in 2021.
Not only did Robin Hood’s Bay rank fourth in the Top ten prettiest UK villages, but it also claimed the same spot in the overall category for the UK’s most attractive towns and villages.
But its beauty isn’t its only draw – the village is steeped in history, particularly its past as a hub for smuggling.
However, visitors should be prepared to stay overnight to fully appreciate this seaside gem.
Its beach was named one of Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice locations for 2021, making it an ideal spot for building sandcastles or exploring rock pools.
At low tide, adventurous types can even journey to Boggle Hole, renowned for its fossil hunting opportunities.
For those who prefer to keep their feet dry, Robin Hood’s Bay sits on the Dinosaur Coast, providing ample opportunity for walks along the clifftop Cleveland Way coastal path, north to Whitby or south to Scarborough.
You can also stroll or cycle along the scenic ‘Cinder Track’, a former railway line running from Scarborough to Whitby, winding through Robin Hood’s Bay’s upper reaches.
If you’re keen on exploring near the village, you can delve into its vibrant past of smuggling, reports MyLondon.
Back in the late 18th century, the Yorkshire coast was notorious for smuggling, with tea, gin, rum, brandy and tobacco spirited away from prying eyes to dodge import duty, originating from the Netherlands and France.
Curious explorers can partake in the Robin Hood’s Bay Ghost Walk, which regales tales of eerie shipwrecks, local legends and the crafty smugglers.
Learn about the village’s ties with England’s famed bandit at the local museum, or visit the Old Coastguard Station.
Dining after your adventures? The Wayfarer Bistro was previously lauded as one of TripAdvisor’s Best of the Best.
A delighted diner exclaimed: “Lovely meal in this fabulous restaurant at the weekend. After visiting Robin Hoods Bay for many years we decided to finally book Wayfarer and will definitely book again! Food and service were great.”
Another guest praised, “Faultless from start to finish.”
The survey of the most beautiful places in the UK took into account Instagram hashtags, mentions in articles about the ‘UK’s prettiest places’, and local National Trust sites.
Although it may be a bit of a trek, visiting one of the UK’s most picturesque villages is the perfect escape – but be warned, you won’t be able to see everything in a day.
Consider taking a spontaneous week-long trip to this haven of smugglers and fossils.
