The charming UK village so pretty it’s regularly named England’s best

Must read

Brits looking for a staycation that combines rich history, picturesque walks, and quaint stone-roofed homes, then a certain Cotswolds village may be just the ticket.

Widely recognised as one of the world’s most beautiful spots, this hidden gem also offers breathtaking views across Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Dorset, and Somerset.

The enchanting Castle Combe in Wiltshire is more than just a pretty face.

The delightful village, which has been used as a filming location for various films including The Wolf Man, Stardust, War Horse, and the original Dr Doolittle, is sure to captivate all who visit.

Castle Combe exudes historic charm with its Cotswold stone cottages dating back 500 years, two welcoming pubs, a community hall and The Manor House hotel and restaurant famous for its exquisite dining.

A stroll around Castle Combe wouldn’t be complete without a visit to St Andrew’s Church, a must-see attraction dating back to the 13th century.

Brimming with historical intrigue, the church houses one of the oldest working clocks in the country, despite it lacking a face.

Meanwhile, Castle Combe’s historic treasure, The Market Cross, dating back to the 14th century, continues to be a magnet for visitors.

Boasting an impressive 4.7 rating on Google, one tourist observed: “Nice historical place. Really preserved well and very scenic.”

Another tourist commented: “Great when you finally get to take a photo with no people sitting all around it.”

A third recounted their visit: “Scenic, dreamy, beautiful place, almost hidden away. We had a great experience, visited on a weekday, it was decently crowded.

“It could be difficult to find a parking spot, especially on weekends. Nevertheless, I recommend this place.”

According to the property website Rightmove, homeowners in the charming Castle Combe could potentially benefit from its popularity as the average home there has sold for approximately £505,000 in the last year.

Visit Wiltshire encourages visitors to indulge in a leisurely “stroll along the village to the bridge” where they can treat themselves to homemade cakes, sweets or bunches of flowers being sold outside the locals’ homes.

They recommend: “Stop at the bottom of the village by the bridge and enjoy a great photographic moment too.”
