A beautiful Greek island boasts beautiful beaches and a low-key atmosphere, with ferry rides there from Santorini starting at just £14.
Kimolos is hailed by visitors as a hidden gem among the Cyclades islands, offering an authentic Greek experience unlike what tourists find in major travel hotspots like Mykonos.
For those looking for posh hotels and all the amenities, other islands like nearby Milos may be a better option, but sunseekers yearning for a rejuvinating stay amid cobbled streets – and Greek salads hailed by The Times as the best in Orthodox Christendom – need look no further than this beauty on the Aegean.
It’s also got a wealth of local history, with an archaeological museum and even an abandoned Venetian castle. The necropolis at Psathi village is also said to be worth a visit, as are the remains of ancient tombs near Kambana beach, according to travel firm Greeka.
Chorio Village, the island’s capital, also features the iconic Cycladic white and blue stone houses, with multiple churches dotted through the area, with traditional narrow streets.
As you would expect, there are plenty of food options, with freshly caught fish and classic Greek specialties, or you can sample some tapas and raki.
The local cheese pie available from bakeries, known as tyrenies, is also recommended by visitors. Several beaches are just a short drive from the village, with Agios Giorgios, Alaki and Kalamitsi noted as among the best.
US travel agency FloridaPanhandle also named the Kimolos’ stunning Prassa Beach as the cleanest in the world, in a list based on millions of travellers’ reviews.
Meanwhile, Kampos Square, the village’s main square, where the tavern puts out tables in the evening, is said to be a great place to spend an evening.
Visitors also rave about the sea taxi visit to the nearby unihabited island of Polyaigos, which has beautiful chalky-blue waters, and a striking coastline.
The quickest way to get to the island is to fly from the capital Athens to Milos, a neighbouring Cyclades island.
Those fancying a break from the busy streets of Santorini can get a ferry to Kimolos from as little as £14, but the average price of ferry tickets is around £32.
It’s a 58 mile-route that takes around six hours and 10 min on average on a Zante Ferry. Once on the island, you can get around via bus, car, or taxi.
