The Portuguese city with hardly any tourists that won ‘the Oscars of tourism’

A little-known town in northern Portugal has been crowned Europe’s Emerging Tourism Destination at the prestigious World Travel Awards, often called the “Oscars of Tourism.”

Braga, a historic city situated roughly an hour north of Porto, claimed the top spot in this competitive category, surpassing last year’s winner, Batumi in Georgia.

The World Travel Awards, established in 1993, recognises excellence across various sectors of the travel and tourism industry.

Winners are selected through a combination of public votes and assessments by verified travel professionals, making the accolades highly respected within the industry.

Braga, often overshadowed by Portugal’s more popular destinations like Lisbon and Porto, is beginning to make its mark on the global tourism map.

The city is renowned for its deep-rooted religious heritage and is considered one of Portugal’s most significant spiritual centres.

One of Braga’s standout attractions is the Braga Cathedral, which holds the distinction of being the oldest cathedral in the country. Construction of this magnificent structure began in the 11th century, several centuries before Portugal was officially recognised as a nation.

The cathedral’s rich history and stunning architecture draw pilgrims and tourists alike, offering a glimpse into the city’s spiritual and cultural past.

In addition to the cathedral, Braga is home to several other religious and historical sites, including the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its intricate baroque stairway and panoramic views of the city.

Braga’s well-preserved historic centre, vibrant cultural scene, and friendly local population have all contributed to its growing popularity among travellers.
