The pretty European island that’s better than the Maldives and 2.5 hours from UK

Must read

Sardinia, the Mediterranean’s second-largest island after Sicily, is often dubbed the Maldives of Europe thanks to its stunning coastline.

Two of its beaches even made it onto the “World’s 50 Best Beaches” list for 2024, curated by over 1,000 travel professionals.

But with its reputation comes consequences: the incredibly beautiful Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast) is known for having a price tag to match its beauty.

However, book yourself a trip outside peak season when the weather is still glorious, and you could spend a lot less than you think.

Temperatures hover around 20 to 28C in May and June, and can reach 30C in September, so the cheaper shoulder seasons are a great time to go.

To experience its stunning coastline, Spiaggia del Principe and Liscia Ruja are gorgeous beaches on the famed Costa Smeralda, or for a more secluded experience, explore Cala Luna and Cala Mariolu.

You can also hike to the historic site of Tiscali surrounded by stunning mountains in the Gennargentu national park, and the island’s capital Cagliari also has amazing historical sites, like the the Roman Amphitheatre.

No visit to Italy is complete without tasting the food; indulge in traditional Sardinian dishes like stuffed pasta (culurgiones), Sardinian gnocchi (malloreddus), and the famous pecorino cheese.

Flights right now from 11 to 18 May 2025 are £81 on Skyscanner

There are multiple airports on the islands, including one in Cagliari, in the southern part of Sardinia, and one in Olbia, in the north-east.
