The pretty Spanish town neglected by tourists with a booming gastronomy industry

Must read

Spain‘s northern regions, often overshadowed by the allure of the sunny south, offer tranquil beaches and breathtaking landscapes for those who venture off the beaten path.

The town of Oviedo, nestled in Spain’s northwest, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

A spokesperson for HomeToGo said: “Impressive architecture, a vibrant foodie scene with cider houses and tapas bars, and a historic old town with cobblestone streets.”

When visiting Oviedo, indulging in the local cuisine is a must, as the town boasts renowned cheeses that are sure to delight any gourmand.

Last year, the town beat hundreds of other Spanish cities and locales to be named Spain’s capital of gastronomy.

The town is known for its many delicacies and is home to six protected designations of origins for its varied local production of cheeses, cider and wines.

Among the mouthwatering traditional dishes visitors will be able to try out is fabada, a bean stew with chorizo and morcilla sausages, fish and seafood from the Cantabrian Sea and a large variety of cheeses.

Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, is home to over 220,000 residents and boasts a treasure trove of cultural delights, from its array of museums to its wealth of historical architecture that harks back to medieval times.

The northern Spanish town shines as an unexpected beacon of quality living, offering a cost of living that’s surprisingly affordable compared to other Spanish locales.

These qualities have secured Oviedo another top spot, with a recent study hailing it as Spain’s prime city for retirees.

While Oviedo may lack a beachfront, it’s a mere stone’s throw from the sea, with the coastal city of Gijon just a 30-minute drive away, less than 19 miles from the city centre.

Despite not being a seaside city, Oviedo’s elevated position and proximity to the ocean bless it with a maritime climate.

The nearest airport to Oviedo is Asturias Airport, a little over 16 miles northwest of the town.

There are multiple non-stop flights from London for as little as £43 while connections via Madrid are available from Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh.
