The royal family that is the richest in the world – almost as rich as Elon Musk

Royal families are synonymous with wealth and extravagance – and one can claim to be the richest family in the world, almost as rich as Elon Musk himself.

The House of Nahyan rules Abu Dhabi, one of the seven emirates that makes up the United Arab Emirates and boasts a net worth of more than $300billion – that’s a whopping £235bn.

The family, whose current head Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan is both the ruler of the emirate and President of the UAE as a whole, are estimated to control around six per cent of the world’s oil supply.

The huge Nahyan family boasts around eight private jets and a fleet of luxury cars.

The Emir, whose name is often abbreviated to MBZ, had 18 brothers – although some have died – and at least 11 sisters as well as 11 children, including two who are adopted.

The Emir’s younger brother, Sheikh Hamad bin Hamdan al Nahyan, is said to own more than 700 cars – with one said to be the world’s largest SUV.

And their taste in expensive items extends beyond vehicles, this includes a chandelier that is reported to include 350,000 crystals.

As well as a sprawling palace in Abu Dhabi, the family also owns luxury property in London, Paris and other cities.

The family also has an investment fund, run by another of the Emir’s brothers.

This has seen them invest in a range of companies, including Manchester City Football Club and Elon Musk‘s SpaceX.

Despite this however, the family has a lower net worth than Mr Musk himself, who is estimated to be worth around $350bn dollars.
