The tiny seaside village named one of the prettiest in Cornwall

Must read

A little Cornish fishing village where locals still sing local songs on a Friday evening before heading back to a cluster of whitewashed, thatched cottages sounds blissful to many.

But this is the lovely reality for those who live in the archetypal fishing cove of Cadgwith.

The village of Cadgwith is situated on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, near the most southerly point in mainland Great Britain, and whisks visitors back in time thanks to its quaint traditional charms.

Established in medieval times, the village centred around the fishing trade. Its hardworking local fleet of fishermen can still be spotted unloading their crates of shellfish on a daily basis.

It’s little wonder that it’s also been named one of the prettiest villages in the whole of the region – it was named the fifth prettiest in Cornwall 2023 by Wanderlust Magazine where it was praised for its fishing community and coastal views.

Cornish Secrets is a company that manages holiday cottages in the area and it explains more about the area that “is small but perfectly picturesque” on its website.

It said: “Unmissable and un-commercialised it is the quintessential stuff of picture postcards, where whitewashed ‘chocolate box’ cottages tumble down the narrow windy path to the harbour.”

Its remote location may put off some visitors – with the drive from Cadgwith to London taking just over six hours, while the journey from Manchester takes almost six and a half hours.

But many still do make the journey to the seaside enclave with travel bloggers sharing their favourite parts about the village online.

On travel and lifestyle blog Hidden Traces Ricarda Christina Hollweg wrote: “Cadgwith is the most charming place I saw during our Cornwall trip.

“Thinking about it, I still can smell the salty breeze and again see these charming old cottages before my eyes.”

And it’s not only travel bloggers that delight in its beauty, many tourists taking to Tripadvisor and Google to share their experiences on its gorgeous local pub the Cadgwith Cove Inn.

One said: “We came here on a wet March day to check it out. It was an incredibly warm welcome, to say the least! Village hospitality at its finest.”

They added: “Highly recommend visiting for a meal, pint in the cosy pub, or stay for the night, whatever tickles your fancy. You won’t be disappointed.”
