Morella is a hidden gem part of Spain‘s Valencian region which is fascinating to visit.

It is located between the cities of Barcelona and Valencia, and even though most people would head to these popular areas instead, Morella is definitely worth the trip. Morella is an ancient walled city that has been named a Site of Cultural Interest.

The city is very small, so it’s best to take a day trip there if you’re staying somewhere close by. It can be reached by car and you’ll be able to visit one of Spain’s lesser-known historical and cultural wonders.

Morella’s main feature is its castle, it was originally built in the 14th century and is the city’s focal point.

It is a military fortress built at the highest point of a natural rock. From the top, visitors can see incredible views of the surrounding area, so it’s definitely worth making your way up to it.

One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “Visiting Morello Castle was a wonderful experience. You get a true sense of history. The views are fantastic and the caves give an insight into what it was like to live there.”

You should also see the church of Saint Maria – it is the main church in the city’s Old Town. The inside of the church is decorated with delicate paintings and gold detailing making it an incredible place to look around.

For a bite to eat before you move on with your holidays elsewhere you can visit Meson Del Pastor. This restaurant is characterised by its recipes in which tradition and innovation merge to create innovative dishes. One diner said: “The atmosphere was lovely, the setting beautiful. The service was great, and the food and wine divine.”

You can also hike in the nearby mountains of Maestrazgo – but make sure you are fully equipped if you plan to do so, as the sun can reach very high temperatures in these areas.
