British far-right activist Tommy Robinson has fled from Cyprus, Ayia Napa’s police force has confirmed.
Express.co.uk contacted the police service in the popular holiday resort, where an officer confirmed that Mr Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, had “left from the country”.
“They informed us that this guy has left from the country [sic] today”, the officer said.
The officer did not know whether or not Mr Yaxley-Lennon left off his own accord or whether he had been sent back to Britain to face justice.
An arrest warrant was issued for the EDL founder after he failed to appear at the Royal Courts of Justice on Monday 29 July for a hearing in a contempt of court case.
The Cypriot officer this website spoke to believed Mr Yaxley-Lennon would have left via an airport: “My supervisor told us that he left. So to know that [means] he left from the airport.”
On Wednesday, a Cypriot police spokesman revealed that their officers were willing to assist the UK’s authorities in taking action against the 41-year-old.
“We are in contact with the British police, and if they need our assistance, we are ready to help,” the spokesperson said amid spiralling concerns about yet more violence on UK streets.
Responding to a report about Cypriot police’s willingness to assist their UK counterparts, the Luton-born activist posted on X: “Lucky I’m not in Cyprus then ain’t it”.
Mr Yaxley-Lennon was wanted in court on 29 July due to “flagrant” contempt of court over a film played at a protest in central London.
The film, depicting Jamal Hijazi, made allegations against the Syrian refugee which a court in 2021 found to be libellous.
The wanted activist posted a version of the outlawed film Silenced on X on 27 July. Mr Yaxley-Lennon claims that in response to his sharing of the banned documentary, the “establishment has come after me full throttle”.
The campaigner’s whereabouts are currently unknown.
