Top underrated Mediterranean destination is one of cheapest with ‘charming town’

With summer holiday costs jumping by seven percent compared to last year, travellers on a budget are hunting for off-the-beaten-path destinations that deliver one-of-a-kind experiences without breaking the bank.

Fresh analysis has brought to light underrated yet wallet-friendly countries that defy standard tourist expectations, ensuring genuine adventure at minimal expense.

Jason Higgs, Senior Deals Strategist with Bountii, has identified nine hidden gem countries that are gentle on the purse but rich in experience.

The top underrated country is Albania, with the European destination boasting sparkling blue seas and beautiful towns – and an average daily cost of just £22.

“Our research shows that some of the most rewarding travel experiences can be found in less-explored corners of the world,” said Jason. “These destinations offer significant savings while also providing authentic cultural immersion and stunning natural beauty.”

Albania

This Balkan treasure boasts stunning mountain landscapes, charming coastal towns, and a rich cultural heritage. 

From the historic city of Berat to the picturesque Albanian Riviera, Albania offers a wealth of experiences at a fraction of the cost of its European neighbours. 

Daily costs: £22-£32

Jason says: “In Albania, you can expect to spend between $30 and $40 on average daily, including accommodation, transportation, and food. Meals of delicious Mediterranean cuisine like lamb, cheese, and seafood are very inexpensive.”

Bhutan

Known for its unique culture, stunning Himalayan landscapes, and commitment to sustainable tourism, Bhutan is a true delight for those seeking an off-the-tourist trail adventure. 

Daily costs: £40-£60

Jason says: “While not the cheapest destination on this list, Bhutan offers an unforgettable experience at a relatively affordable cost. Sustainable low-impact tourism is prioritised.”

Bolivia

Boasting diverse landscapes, from the stunning Salar de Uyuni salt flats to the vibrant city of La Paz, Bolivia is a budget traveller’s paradise. 

Daily costs: £15-£25

“With accommodation and food costs in Bolivia being incredibly low, you can immediately explore this South American gem on $20-$30 per day,” Jason says.

Kyrgyzstan

Nestled in Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan is a true hidden beauty for adventure seekers. 

With its breathtaking mountain ranges, pristine lakes, and nomadic culture, this country offers a unique and affordable travel experience.

Jason says: “Expect to spend around $20-$30 per day, including stays in traditional yurt camps and local cuisine. You can even find filling meals for just $2-3.”

Gabon

This West African nation is a true marvel for nature lovers, boasting pristine rainforests, diverse wildlife, and stunning beaches.

Jason says: “With its relatively low tourism numbers, Gabon offers an authentic and affordable travel experience. You can comfortably explore this country on $40-$50 per day.”
