The charming village of Ullapool in West Scotland, recently recognized as the UK’s most beautiful village, is grappling with a surge in tourism that is altering its tranquil character.

Once celebrated for its serene atmosphere, framed by majestic mountains and rich marine life, Ullapool is now facing the challenges of managing an increasing number of visitors. This picturesque village, named the most beautiful small settlement in the country earlier this year by a group of UK travel photographers, has long been a haven for those in search of natural beauty and peace.

The village’s stunning landscape, with mountains towering over the bay and regular sightings of dolphins and porpoises, has always been a magnet for visitors seeking a quiet retreat. However, the advent of large cruise ships and the growing popularity of the North Coast 500 route have dramatically changed the scene.

According to Visit Scotland, the number of domestic tourists staying in Ullapool rose significantly by 50 percent between 2014 and 2019, increasing from 54,000 between 2014 and 2016 to 82,000 between 2017 and 2019, with numbers continuing to climb.

While this influx has boosted the local economy, it has also introduced challenges related to overtourism, a problem shared by many European destinations today.

Steve Chisholm, a local resident and politician who ran for the Alba Party in the Ullapool constituency, highlighted growing concerns among locals, especially regarding housing. Property prices in Ullapool have seen a steep rise, with the average home price reaching £312,417 last year, a significant increase from £201,475 in 2014.
