A tourist has dubbed the usually popular Canary Island of Tenerife as “dead”, claiming it has become quieter than Turkey.
Over the last few weeks, people have been claiming Turkey is “finished” amid price increases at the budget holiday hotspot making it too expensive considering the ongoing cost of living crisis.
Images have gone viral on social media, showing how deserted the beaches, hotels, streets and restaurants were in some of the country’s most popular areas.
Travellers are now suggesting that Tenerife is also becoming a bit of a ghost town.
Hayley Duffy posted videos of the empty streets on TikTok and claimed the hotspot is “dead”.
She said: “Everybody is saying how quiet Turkey is this summer but, honestly, what is going on with Tenerife? There’s not a soul in sight.
“I don’t know what’s going on. I’ve been to both Turkey and Tenerife and, honestly, I would say that Tenerife is so much quieter.”
In addition to the video, Ms Duffy questioned whether the lack of crowds was due to fewer people taking holidays or other unknown factors. As her holiday occurred at the end of August, the fact that the island was empty left her baffled.
One person commented in reply to the video: “It’s too expensive now to go to Tenerife.”
Another said: “I work here and the final week of August is always DEAD but in September it gets really busy again but with different people!”
“Kids back in school, plus going abroad is so expensive now. People can’t afford it,” said a third.
“Tenerife has had its busiest summer since pre-Covid this year. As a Tenerife business owner living in the UK, I know it’s been manic,” another said, rushing to defend the holiday hotspot.
The Canary Islands had a record-breaking summer in terms of air traffic and passenger numbers, marking a significant milestone for Spanish aviation. During August 2024, AENA-managed airports handled over 32 million passengers, a 7.4 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Despite the quietness, Hayley acknowledged that Tenerife remains “lovely”.
