The force said in a statement: “The occupants of the car have been taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital for treatment. Emergency services remain at the scene and a closure is in place between junctions 11A and 12.” The extent of the passengers’ injuries is not yet known.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and find alternative routes.

The southbound carriageway between junctions 11A for Gloucester and junction 12 for Quedgeley was closed following the incident.
