Travellers warned to ‘never’ do popular trend on long-haul flights

Must read

Long-haul flights are increasingly popular as people from the UK jet off for some winter sun in the southern hemisphere.

However, experts have issued a stark warning about one activity travellers should never engage in during their journey.

A trend has emerged on TikTok where influencers promote in-flight skincare routines to ensure they arrive at their destination looking fresh and clean.

However, dermatologist Bella von Nesselrode has strongly advised against this practice.

She warns that seat headrests can harbour sweat, oil, and dirt from previous passengers, leading to bacterial build-up which can clog pores and cause breakouts.

The confined and often unhygienic conditions of the plane bathroom, along with the surrounding environment, can also be a breeding ground for bacteria.

Therefore, it’s best to avoid skincare routines like cleansing while on board.

Instead of performing your skincare routine in your seat or the bathrooms, you should try to avoid touching your face altogether to prevent the transfer of bacteria.

Regular hand sanitisation is also crucial.

Bella shared her top five tips for protecting your skin on a long-haul flight with Travel Republic.

Above all, she emphasised the importance of keeping your hands clean and refraining from touching your face.

Additionally, wearing minimal or no makeup during the flight allows your skin to breathe.

Maintaining a light makeup application can prevent your pores from becoming blocked, which could lead to breakouts.

Upon boarding the flight, it’s advised to clean the headrest, tray table and your mobile phone with an antibacterial wipe, as these are all potential sources of contamination.

Bella also suggests performing your skincare routine prior to boarding the plane to ensure your face is thoroughly cleansed before your lengthy journey.
