German ministers say they are “taking concrete action”
The UK Foreign Office has amended its travel advice for the Czech Republic, extending an earlier alert about Germany. The ‘s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) provides frequent updates about any of 226 countries and territories around the world, in a bid to keep UK holidaymakers and other travellers informed and, most importantly, safe.
On Wednesday, a new alert was issued for the Czech Republic as a post on X said: “Read our latest travel advice update for #CzechRepublic about new information on travelling from the Czech Republic to Germany”. Amended travel guidance on Gov.uk now reads: “A temporary reintroduction of border controls are currently in place at Germany’s land borders.”

Last month, Germany’s Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community ordered the temporary reintroduction of border control at its land borders. Minister Nancy Faeser said: “We are taking concrete action to reinforce our internal security, and we are taking a hard line against irregular migration. We are continuing to pursue this course.

“Until the new Common European Asylum System and other measures ensure strong protection for the EU’s external borders, we must also do more to control our national borders. These border control measures include effective refusals of entry at the border.”

The minister added that “more than 30,000 people have been denied entry at the land borders with Poland, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic just since October 2023”. Checks at Germany’s land border with Austria are currently in place until November 11, while the order to conduct checks at the land borders with Switzerland, the Republic of Poland and the Czech Republic remains in force until December 15.
UK travellers are reminded that anyone planning to visit the Czech Republic, Germany, or any of the other 27 Schengen Area nations who will use the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES), will from November need to have your fingerprints and your photo taken when entering the Schengen area. If you enter the Schengen area through Dover, Eurotunnel at Folkestone or St Pancras International, your fingerprints and photo will be taken before you leave the UK.

Gov.uk guidance adds: “You will also need to provide either your fingerprint or photo on exit. You may experience longer queues at borders when the new system starts.”
