Holidaymakers have been told they’ll face longer security checks when travelling to Turkey. The country is popular with travellers from the UK thanks to its seaside resorts and city break destinations.

Tragically, the nation fell victim to a terrorist attack earlier this week. The Turkish government said at least five people were killed, with 22 injured, after an attack on aerospace company in Kahramankazan, approximately 40km from the capital Ankara, on Wednesday (October 23). It said the two responsible for the attack were also killed.

British nationals in the vicinity were advised by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on Thursday to follow the advice of the local authorities and keep informed through media channels. A second FCDO update issued on Thursday evening has alerted those planning to travel to Turkey of more stringent security measures at the country’s airports.

The alert on Gov.uk reads: “While the incident has ended, the response is ongoing, including increased security measures at Turkish airports, which means security checks will take longer than normal. If you are in the area near the attack, follow the advice of the local authorities and monitor local media.”

Located to the north west of Turkey, Kahramankazan sits a considerable distance from popular tourist regions such as the coastal areas and the cities of Istanbul to the west and Antalya to the southwest.
