The world has erupted into a series of conflcit zones, leading one expert to say: ‘We are indirectly in this war as well and the idea that most of the world is at peace is a fallacy, it’s just not true’
The UK is already in a 21st Century version of World War 3, an expert has claimed. Dr Lily Hamourtziadou, a Senior Lecturer in International Relations and Security and Principal Researcher of Iraq Body Count at Birmingham City University said she feel that a global conflict has already begun.
She felt that the key difference compared to the World Wars of the past is the style, pointing out that it is underway already, but rather than troops in the trenches, the battlegrounds are over information and hybrid warfare.
Her comments come in the wake of Syrian rebels overthrowing the Russian-backed Assad regime, and North Korean troops assisting Vladimir Putin’s forces in their invasion of Ukraine.

Such moves, as well as Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas and Hezbollah and the bombing of Yemen, mark a clear taking of sides around the globe.
Asked if the current state of world politics amounts to a war she said: “I do count that as a war, and we are in this war as well even though we haven’t sent fighters to risk their lives, we have provided weapons, support, money, in all of these wars [around the world].
“We are indirectly in this war as well and the idea that most of the world is at peace is a fallacy, it’s just not true.

“We are fighting remote wars, we can strike Yemen any time we like and mostly as an ally of the USA, which does fight global war. In a sense, the world is at war, just not violence everywhere”.
Conflicts outside of the World Wars of the 20th Century have of course been going on frequently around the globe, but for Dr Hamourtziadou, the current situation reflects a modern version of what a global conflict looks like.
She said this wasn’t WW3, “in the sense that second and first world wars were world wars, but maybe in a 21st century type of world war, because wars now are different from 20th century world wars and a lot of these wars are fought from a distance, they are remote wars, so yes, in that sense yes”.
