The distant dream of Hawaii might seem a world away, but Britain’s own ‘Hawaii of the North’ – the Isle of Tiree – is tempting adventurers with its stunning scenery and crystal clear seas.
Tucked away at the most westerly point of the Scottish Inner Hebrides, this idyllic island boasts a mere 650 residents.
With waters warmed by the Gulf Stream and beaches to rival the best in the world, it’s no wonder this diminutive gem has caught the attention of social media sensation Tom Wheaton, known as @brit_abroad online.
In an Instagram post from July, Tom unveiled fascinating tidbits about Tiree, which he fondly refers to as the ‘Hawaii of the North’, reports the Mirror.
His post said: “A few FUN FACTS about TIREE. Tiree is one of the sunniest places in the UK!
“Boasts warm waters heated by the gulf stream. Nicknamed ‘The Hawaii of the North’. Has some world-class surf and beaches. Home to @redbullsurfing sponsored @benlarg.”
The Isle of Tiree didn’t leave followers unmoved; they took to social media in droves to express their admiration.
Marina gushed, “I’m sure it’s better there than in the Maldives.”
While Heike excitedly announced, “I’ll be there!! Next summer!! Can’t wait to see the beauty and meet the people!!”
Alia joined the chorus of praise, enthusing, “Really beautiful, the colour of the water is just breathtaking! Had a great great uncle who lived near a place called Hough bay.”
And among the island’s glorious sands, Balevullin Beach stands out not only for its beauty but also as a surfer’s haven.
This beach is also where Blackhouse Watersports, a family-owned outfit, imparts the joys of surfing and kite surfing to eager novices and experienced enthusiasts alike.
Their beach hut, perfectly located for watersports enthusiasts, is a must-visit.
You might recognise one of their own, Ben Larg, a 19-year-old big wave surfer from the island.
Balephuil Bay, on the island’s south west, hosts the Tiree Wave Classic, a world championship windsurfing event dating back to 1985.
This year, the event will take place in October.
Tiree benefits from the warm Gulf Stream, making it one of the sunniest places in the UK.
Even during winter, temperatures here are higher than the mainland.
