The Home Secretary of the United Kingdom has asked the UK Migration Advisory Committee to examine the occupational categories related to engineering and information technology. The goal of the analysis is to understand why companies in some industries rely too heavily on hiring people from abroad to fill skill shortages in their workforces.

In essence, the Migration Advisory Committee’s (MAC) job is to investigate the rationale for the nation’s reliance on foreign hiring in the field of information technology and telecommunications.

The occupational categories included in this research are information technology (IT), telecommunications, and engineering professionals since they most utilize work visas.

These industries are among the top ten industries that have relied on hiring from overseas, and the government wants the MAC to explain why this is the case as well as any potential future need for these industries.

The UK’s ongoing skills shortages and other labor market flaws are reflected in the high amounts of international recruitment that are currently occurring. The Home Secretary has asked the MAC to prepare an evidence-based report by May 2025, as part of the UK government’s commitment to decreasing migration.

Since January 2024, the UK government has tightened its visa regulations, signaling a substantial change in how it is handling net migration.
