UK to host AI Safety Summit follow-up in San Francisco

Must read

The UK will in November host a follow-up to the AI Safety Summits focused on implementing commitments made.

The conference, which will take place in San Francisco on 21 and 22 November, follows the Bletchley Park AI Safety Summit in November 2023 and the Seoul summit last May.

The California event will bring together AI developers with workshops and discussions on putting into practice measures discussed in South Korea as preparations take place for the AI Action Summit, set to take place in France in February next year.

“The conference is a clear sign of the UK’s ambition to further the shared global mission to design practical and effective approaches to AI safety,” said Tech Secretary Peter Kyle.

“We’re just months away from the AI Action Summit, and the discussions in San Francisco will give companies a clear focus on where and how they can bolster their AI safety plans building on the commitments they made in Seoul.”

Last May, world leaders, AI developers and researchers gathered in the South Korean capital where they agreed to set thresholds to determine when AI models present a “severe risk”.

The November conference will be co-hosted by the UK’s AI Safety Institute and the Centre for the Governance of AI.

On Wednesday, the US government announced the first meeting of the International Network of AI Safety Institutes, which will take place days before the San Francisco event.

The British AI Safety Institute this year opened an office in San Francisco.
