A report by recruitment firm Hays suggests the United Kingdom faces a shortage of skilled workers for in-demand job sectors, including technology, manufacturing and banking.

But, paradoxically, it comes amid growing concerns about the impact of immigration rule changes around the Skilled Worker Visa salary threshold for foreign workers and their families – which rose from £26,200 to £38,700 in April.

Evening Standard social editor Deeya Sonalkar describes her experiences navigating the Home Office’s labyrinthine visa system, plus business editor Jonathan Prynn on the economic implications.

In part two, the Standard has got you covered for this summer’s top free London art shows, and acting culture editor Nick Clark has the highlights.
