UK weather: New snow and ice warnings issued – as hundreds of flood alerts in place

Must read

Millions of commuters returning to work faced more snow, ice and rain today – as new weather warnings were issued for the coming days.

Travel disruption is also likely due to heavy rain and thawing snow, the Met Office said, and some 165 flood warnings and 321 flood alerts are in place.

Leicestershire Fire Service declared a major incident on Monday as widespread flooding hit Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

It said it had received more than 200 calls, with crews finding cars stuck in flood water and evacuating residents from flooded homes and rising waters.

It comes after most of the country saw heavy snow or icy rain fall over the weekend.

Major airports closed their runways for several hours due to snow, while stranded vehicles and collisions blocked key roads.

The Met Office has issued fresh alerts for snow and ice: Wales and western England are under a warning from 5pm today to 10am Tuesday; Northern Ireland from 3pm to 11am Tuesday; and a large swathe of Scotland from 4pm until noon.

Several centimetres are possible, with 5cm or more on higher ground.

Meanwhile, nearly all of the South – as far north as London – is under a snow alert from 9am on Wednesday until midnight.

About 2-5cm could build up fairly widely, the Met Office says, while 10cm could be seen on high ground.

Travel delays, stranded vehicles and power cuts are all a possibility under the warnings – while some rural communities could be cut off.

The Environment Agency is also advising people to stay away from swollen rivers and not drive through flood water.

Cold air will return and remain across the whole country from Monday onwards after a brief spell of milder conditions in southern areas, the Met Office added.

Deputy chief forecaster Mike Silverstone said: “The low pressure that brought the snow and heavy rain in the South will move out to the east by Monday.

“This will allow a cold northerly flow to become established again for much of next week.

“This will bring further sleet, snow and hail showers to northern Scotland in particular, but possibly to some other areas, especially near western coasts, with a fair amount of dry and bright weather elsewhere.”

He added: “Temperatures will remain below average, with widespread frost and the threat of ice at times. Some areas, especially in the north, may struggle to get above freezing for several days.”
