UK weather: power cuts and travel delays as snow warnings issued

Must read

Heavy snow and freezing rain are likely to cause power cuts and travel disruption across the UK this weekend, the Met Office and National Highways have warned.

Up to 40 cm of snow could fall in some areas on Saturday night, leading to delays and cancellations to flights and rail journeys and the risk of stranded cars.

Ice could make travel on higher ground such as the Cotswold and the Peak District particularly hazardous, the Met Office said. Icing on power lines and towers can also lead to electricity outages.

Arctic air sent overnight temperatures well below freezing. The lowest temperature recorded on Friday night was minus 8.6C in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire.
