UK weather: Wimbledon and Grand Prix face disruption as weekend of heavy rain continues

Must read

Another day of heavy rain in the UK could cause disruption to Sunday’s Wimbledon and the British Grand Prix.

Temperatures below the average for this time of year are expected to continue across the country, following miserable conditions seen on Saturday, where some areas had 20mm of rainfall.

A yellow weather warning is also in place until 10am on Sunday morning for North Wales and Merseyside, with the Met Office warning of potential travel disruption or flooding at the start of the day.

Simon Partridge, Met Office meteorologist, warned those attending either SW19 or Silverstone on Sunday afternoon to prepare to potentially get wet – despite a brighter start to the day.

“[Sunday] is sunshine and showers across the whole of the UK, but not quite as windy as Saturday,” he said.

“There will probably be disruption to play across Wimbledon, mainly in the afternoon. Wimbledon will mostly be dry in the morning, and the same with the Grand Prix.”

Thunder is also possible, most likely in the West, as temperatures peak at around 17C to 19C, with a chance of 20C (68F) on the east coast.

Rain has already caused issues for players in SW19 as well as fans, with the wet weather causing persistent delays to matches on outdoor courts during the first week of the tennis championship.
