A UK woman, Sammi Mai, suffered a head injury after a large cauliflower fell from a top shelf while she was shopping at a Waitrose store in Bath, Somerset. Mai, who was browsing the discount section when the incident occurred, described being struck by the heavy vegetable, resulting in a concussion that left her unconscious. “Suddenly a really large and heavy item fell on the top of my head,” Mai told Fox News. She was later diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome and continues to experience headaches, nausea, and neck pain.
After the accident, Mai and her husband contacted Waitrose customer service, seeking resolution for the injury that disrupted their holiday plans. In response, the store provided a £25 gift voucher and £8 for taxi fare, but Mai felt the compensation was inadequate given the severity of her injury. “As a loyal Waitrose customer, I feel deeply let down by their response. This ruined our holiday. I was very unwell and I’m still suffering and unable to work,” she told The Sun. She also expressed concern over how the staff handled the incident, noting that they simply returned the cauliflower to the top shelf, suggesting the matter wasn’t taken seriously.
Waitrose acknowledged the incident and confirmed that Mai received immediate medical assistance from a trained first aider. In a statement to Fox News Digital, a representative said, “We are sorry to hear she is unwell. We take customer safety incredibly seriously and have thoroughly investigated this case.” They advised Mai to seek legal counsel if she wished to pursue the matter further.
Mai is reportedly considering legal action against the store, citing ongoing health complications and dissatisfaction with how the situation was managed.
