UK’s answer to the Amalfi Coast is so pretty you’ll forget you’re off the M2

As the UK basks in a sweltering 28-degree heat, what could be more refreshing than a plunge into a turquoise blue lake followed by a leisurely nap on a sandy beach?

While many Brits are jetting off to the Med for such pleasures, there’s a holiday spot offering Mediterranean-style allure much closer to home.

St Andrews Lakes, nestled in Halling, Kent, is a hidden gem boasting 70 acres of crystal clear water, an unexpected sight given its location. Ideal for a family beach day, this former quarry has transformed into a watersports haven just a stone’s throw from the M2 motorway.

Close your eyes and plug in your headphones, and you might just believe you’re basking under the sun in a far-flung exotic locale. For visitors keen to make the most of the blistering summer weather, the lakeside resort also offers a plethora of activities and attractions.

In an incredibly serene setting, the freshwater lake provides all the sun, sea, and sand you could desire without the need for a plane ticket. In one of many short TikTok videos, the emerald blue water, caused by the refraction of limestone deposits suspended in the old quarry lake, is showcased in all its glory, reports the Mirror.

The 30-meter-deep lake is ideal for a bit of scuba diving, with professional courses available for those interested in learning the art of underwater breath-holding. The lakes are also a hit with fishing aficionados, particularly those with a penchant for catching carp.

Home to approximately 500 fish, including some species yet to be identified, the lake has seen catches weighing up to a whopping 41 pounds. However, with room for only 25 anglers at any given time, it’s recommended to secure your spot in advance.

If you’re drawn to the water, St Andrews is an officially recognised swimming venue, boasting crystal clear waters devoid of reeds or mud. During the summer months, the surface water can reach a balmy 20C, enticing many indoor pool swimmers to take a plunge in the fresh Kent air.

The lakes also boast a sizeable aqua park, equipped with an inflatable obstacle course, as well as a children’s aqua park for the little ones who love the water.

Visitors have the opportunity to try paddleboarding or hire a pedalo before unwinding in the sauna, plunge pool and hot tub. For those beach lovers wishing to extend their stay, there’s even the option to rent a lakeside barbecue cabin.

Open water swimmers can join like-minded enthusiasts throughout the year, with events such as Harvest Moon swims, Halloween swims and even a bracing New Year’s Day dip.

While it’s often said that the best things in life are free, this isn’t one of them. Visitors are advised to check the prices and booking procedure on the website prior to setting off.

A full day’s access to the beach will set you back £25 per adult, £7.50 per child and toddlers under two can enter for free. Entrance to the water park starts from £25 and family tickets are also available. Pre-booking is crucial during the school holidays.

Equipment hire and other activities are also subject to additional costs starting from £9 for an open water swimming session to £35 for pedalo hire.

Located just 20 minutes from Chatham, this watery paradise is perfect for a family day out, serving up Mediterranean vibes by the bucket load.
