A supersonic ultra speed jet that will fly passengers from London to New York in 60 minutes has taken a step closer in a “major breakthrough”.
Venus Aerospace are aiming to create flights six times faster than the speed of sound.
The Texas-based company, focused on making hypersonic travel a reality, has announced they are producing an advanced propulsion engine that could power high-speed vehicles, including drones and aircraft.
The aerospace company says their hypersonic jet will be able to travel from New York to London at speeds of up to 3,600mph in just one hour, cutting the flight time by seven hours thanks to the Venus Detonation Ramjet 2,000lb Thrust Engine, also known as VDR2.
Venus Aerospace said that the VDR would offer a single engine that can go as fast as Mach 6 – Mach speeds are rates faster than the speed of sound.
The company says that the engine should be able to sustain efficient cruising at Mach 4 on journeys of up to 5,000 miles, and will be designed for take-off and landing at various airports with a 30-minute turnaround time.
They claim that their Stargazer M400 will be Earth’s first hypersonic, reusable aircraft, capable of travelling for 5,000 miles whilst producing half the CO2 emissions of an ordinary flight.
Founders Andrew and Sassie Duggleby believe the development of the technology can change the future of travel, diplomacy, and medicine in the future.
Founded in 2020, after the couple became frustrated at the time it took to travel from Japan to the US, it is hoped the plane will be operational in the 2030s.
Speaking at the Up.Summit where the product was unveiled Andrew said: “We are excited to partner with Velontra to achieve this revolution in high-speed flight, given their expertise in high-speed air combustion.”
