If the Maldives is a stretch too far for your wallet, fear not.
When one conjures images of Scottish getaways, it might be the rugged beauty of a Highlands escapade or the rare glimmers of sun piercing through persistent drizzle.
Yet, a couple has recently discovered what has be dubbed the ‘Maldives of Scotland’, having chanced upon an idyllic beach during a hiking holiday. This hidden gem offers dazzling white sands and waters so clear they seem otherworldly.
Known as ‘The Travel Duo’, Chris and Sam shared their experience on YouTube, detailing their unexpected find. “I was just on the beach, we were just about to leave,” said Sam.
“I sent the drone up to get some drone shots of this beach and I saw another incredible stunning spot on the other side of this mountain… so I’m taking Chris and Fletcher on a little bit of an adventure to see if we can get there because it looks insane.”
Their trek through mud and over hills was rewarded with the sight of pristine sand. “Doesn’t it look like the Maldives?”, she said, before later adding: “I feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven. Honestly, it’s insane and that water is way too good to not go in for a swim.”
Chris and Sam’s dream beach is tucked away on the Isle of Harris, off Scotland’s west coast in the Outer Hebrides. They’ve kept the exact location a secret, but Harris is brimming with picturesque spots for those seeking a similar experience.
Consider Luskentyre Sands, recently crowned the country’s top beach. This divine location is renowned not only for its vast expanse of white sand but also as the setting for the BBC‘s Castaway series.
Despite its fame, you’ll have no trouble finding a spot for your towel either, thanks to its secluded location keeping it relatively undiscovered. The population of Harris, Lewis and their smaller neighbouring islands is just around 21,574.
Hushinish beach, another gem located at the end of a 12-mile-long road on Harris’ west side, is a favourite among dolphins and seals, according to Visit Scotland. The beach offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.
With Maldivian holidays currently priced at about £1,700 per person per week, according to Travel Republic, these locations offer a budget-friendly alternative for Brits. Commenters on Chris and Sam’s video seem to agree, expressing their astonishment at the beauty of these spots.
One wrote: “Got to keep some secrets, Lewis and Harris [are] on my list for this summer when I can get a trip of off from work at sea, my beagles need to be free on these beaches, great vid.” Another added: “Wow. Such a great video and what a place!”
