England 94-4 (Salt 41, Curran 39) Over 25 (Shepherd): 2, 1, 4, 0, 1, 1
After a brilliant start, West Indies’ standards have slipped slightly in the field. A relay throw is not executed perfectly and Salt and Curran come through for an extra run. In what is shaping up to be a low-scoring game, these things could be vital.
The infection is spreading, as Shepherd goes short and wide and Salt cuts him viciously for four.
We’re at the halfway stage, and West Indies are in front but Salt and Curran are rebuilding nicely.
England 85-4 (Salt 36, Curran 36) Over 24 (Chase): 1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0
Chase is doing an excellent job for his captain. One from it and he has figures of 0-13 from four overs.
England 84-4 (Salt 36, Curran 35) Over 23 (Shepherd): 1, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1
England tickling along quite nicely now The thoughts of it being a 300+ wicket long since went out of the window. It’s now a case of setting a target that they can make a decent fist of defending.
England 79-4 (Salt 34, Curran 32) Over 22 (Chase): 1, 1, 1, 0, 0, 1
Chase landing it on the dot and no risks from Salt and Curran right now. With four wickets down, the England camp will be working out when to press on.
For those keen to relive Alzarri’s strop, here it is in all its glory (Onlly available to UK users).
England 75-4 (Salt 32, Curran 30) Over 21 (Shepherd): 6, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0
Hope turns to Shepherd and he is greeted in some style by Salt, who plonks him over the fence at midwicket for six. The first maxi of the innings, and it brings up the 50 partnership.
England 68-4 (Salt 25, Curran 30) Over 20 (Chase): 1, 1, 0, 1, 1, 0
Plenty of singles on offer for England right now and both sides are adopting a wait-and-see approach. Windies happy not to concede boundaries having got ahead of the game early on.
England 64-4 (Salt 23, Curran 28) Over 19 (Motie): 1, 4, 1, 0, 0, 0
Spin at both ends as Motie continues.Â
Curran looks in excellent touch and he slams the ball over mid-off for four. Overpitched from the bowler and Curran does not miss out.
England 58-4 (Salt 22, Curran 23) Over 18 (Chase): 0, 1, 1, 0, 1, 1
Another bowling change, and Hope turns to another spinner with Chase brought on to bowl his offies. Settles into a nice line and England milk the singles.
England 54-4 (Salt 18, Curran 18) Over 17 (Motie): 1, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1
England bring up their 50, but it’s slow old progress.
We get a sight of Jos Buttler walking out of the dressing room with his pads on, seemingly heading for a net. The skipper seems set to return for the T20s.
England 49-4 (Salt 18, Curran 18) Over 16 (Joseph): 0, 0, 1, 0, 2, 0
Buzzers! And Alzarri is ticking again as an overthrow leads to an extra run. The bowler yells out in frustration.Â
If anyone is rooming with Alzarri tonight, they might be advised to sleep in the bathroom.
Run out chance for West Indies, Curran was scrambling and short of his ground but the throw was off target. Much to Alzarri’s frustration.
England 46-4 (Salt 16, Curran 17) Over 15 (Motie): 1, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1
No-risk cricket from England, but Curran and Salt have set about a rebuild of sorts with 22 off 31 balls. Drinks break for the players.
England 43-4 (Salt 15, Curran 15) Over 14 (Joseph): 0, 0, 1, 1, 0, 0
Joseph is about 10kph slower than early when he was steaming in, and steaming for some as yet unknown reason. But it’s tidy stuff as he limits England to a couple of singles.
England 41-4 (Salt 14, Curran 14) Over 13 (Motie): 0, 0, 1, 1, 4, 0
Spin is introduced and there is a bit of turn for Motie early on.Â
Turn or not, won’t do much good if you are bowling half-volleys and Curran pierces the field at cover for four. Curran looks in excellent touch.
England 35-4 (Salt 13, Curran 9) Over 12 (Joseph): 0, 1, 4, 0, 1, 0
Alzarri is back. He does not have steam coming out of his ears, but he still looks to be ticking. Intense is probably a decent way to describe the look on his face.Â
Being flayed over midwicket for four by Curran has probably not improved Joseph’s mood.
England 29-4 (Salt 12, Curran 4) Over 11 (Forde): 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 4
A rare bad ball, short and wide from Forde, and Curran slaps it to the fence at backward point. A very good shot, but the ball got what it deserved.
WICKET! England 24-4 (Salt 11, Curran) Over 10 (Shepherd): 1, 4, 0, 0, W, 0
A boundary for the skipper, a glorious drive wide of mid off. Livingstone held his shape superbly. Will that break the shackles? No is the answer.
Three balls later and the captain is back in the hutch. Chases a wide one and edges behind to Hope. West Indies celebrations tell you all you need to know about the importance of that wicket.
England 19-3 (Salt 10, Livingstone 2) Over 9 (Forde): 0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0
A run off the bat, finally, as Salt dabs the ball down to third man for one after 16 successive dots.
England 18-3 (Salt 9, Livingstone 2) Over 8 (Shepherd): 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0
Shepherd is a little short of the ideal length, but he is getting some extra bounce and Livingstone shows him a lot of respect. It’s back-to-back maidens.
England 18-3 (Salt 9, Livingstone 2) Over 7 (Forde): 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0
Bowlers firmly on top right now. A maiden for Forde, and the Windies bowlers deserve credit as their lengths have been excellent. A rebuilding job for England now.
WICKET! England 18-3 (Salt 9, Livingstone 2) Over 6 (Shepherd): W, 0, 1lb, 0, 1, 2
Joseph back on the field, but not with ball in hand. Hope removes him and tosses the ball to Shepherd.
The decision pays off with a wicket. It’s a rank long-hop from Shepherd, Bethell slaps it but Chase leaps to take a brilliant catch at backward point.Â
They had to check the catch for grounding, but it was good. Brilliant from Chase.
England in the swamp right now.
England 14-2 (Salt 8, Bethell 0) Over 5 (Forde): 4, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0
Bonkers is a good way to describe what’s going on right now. Joseph stormed off the field at the end of the previous over and no sub has replaced him. West Indies only had 10 on the field for the fourth over.
Alzarri returns to the field with a face like thunder.
WICKET! England 10-2 (Salt 4, Bethell 0) Over 4 (Joseph): 0, 0, 0, W, 0, 0
Joseph chuntering to Hope about the field he wants. Does a very good furrowed brow, does Alzarri. The captain wins the argument, and that is how it should be.
Whether he’s unhappy or not, Joseph is ticking and finds an absolute snorter. Pace and bounce and it takes the edge of Cox’s glove and Hope clings on. Joseph does not even celebrate, just walks back to his mark. Wow!
WICKET! England 10-1 (Salt 4, Cox 1) Over 3 (Forde): 0, 4, W, 0, 1, 0
A mix of styles in the bowling department, which is no bad thing, with Forde swinging the ball in and Joseph predominantly taking the ball away.
First boundary of the innings, and a thing of beauty it was too. Jacks leans into the ball and strokes it to the fence at cover.
From nowhere Forde finds some outswing, the ball more holds its line than hoops away, and takes the outside edge of Jacks’ bat and Hope takes a simple catch.
Very good start from West Indies.
England 5-0 (Salt 4, Jacks 1) Over 2 (Joseph): 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1
Joseph finds some outswing at a fair old pace. Pitching the ball up does look the way to go at this early stage. That may change when the lights come on, but that’s some way off yet.
England 3-0 (Salt 3, Jacks ) Over 1 (Forde): 0, 3, 0, 0, 0, 0
Forde short and wide with the first ball but he is helped out by a fine stop at point. Second ball is a shocking misfield and England come through for three. Rutherford saves the boundary but gets up a little gingerly.
There is a bit of inswing for Forde. If it wasn’t for the misfield, he’d have been looking at a maiden. Good start for the Windies.
Forde to open the bowling
Forde has ball in hand and will be bowling to Salt. Jacks is the non-striker. Cookie feels that with some big names to come back in, this match is an audition for the likes of Jacks, Salt, Bethell and Cox to press their claims for a spot in England’s best XI.
Anthems done, ready for play
The players have lined up for the anthems and we are minutes away from the start of play.
Jason Holder, in the TNT Sports studio, has experience of playing a lot of cricket in Barbados and feels under lights the ball will come on and be good for batting. Lots of evidence to suggest that batting second is a good thing. Hmm.
Carlos Brathwaite, he of remember the name fame, has described the pitch as a “second or third day Test pitch” and feels it will be a belter for batting. Is happy with Hope’s decision to chase.
Cook not concerned by loss of toss
Speaking in the TNT Sports studio, Alastair Cook described England as rusty in the first game and better in the second. Cookie does not feel the toss will have a huge impact.
West Indies have won the toss and Shai Hope has elected to have a bowl first. Is happy to chase under lights.
Livingstone concedes he would have also had a bowl if the coin had fallen his way.
England have brought in Reece Topley and Jamie Overton for Saqib Mahmood and John Turner. It’s fair to say Livingstone has a lot of bowling options.
England: 1: Phil Salt (wk), 2: Will Jacks, 3: Jordan Cox, 4: Jacob Bethell, 5: Liam Livingstone (capt), 6: Sam Curran, 7: Dan Mousley, 8: Jamie Overton, 9: Jofra Archer, 10: Adil Rashid, 11: Reece Topley
West Indies: 1: Brandon King, 2: Evin Lewis, 3: Keacy Carty, 4: Shai Hope (capt & wk), 5: Sherfane Rutherford, 6: Shimron Hetmyer, 7: Roston Chase, 8: Alzarri Joseph, 9: Gudakesh Motie, 10: Romario Shepherd, 11: Matthew Forde
We’re around 15 minutes away from the toss, while there is some bad weather on the horizon…
